Montage & Northbridge Carnivale Macabre

Montage will join in the fun of Carnival Macabre with craft activities, cool window displays and loads of spooky fun!

The City of Perth's Carnival Macabre returns for its second year to celebrate Halloween and Day of the Dead with a festival of thrills and chills!

There's more than a week of spooky festivities throughout Northbridge promising to excite with performances, film screenings, exhibitions, food markets, Halloween parties and plenty of opportunities to dress up.

Catch a free spooky flick at the Northbridge Piazza as part of Carnival Macabre Film Season which includes favourites like Ghostbusters, Monsters Inc, Little Shop of Horrors & Psycho.
Make sure you come in costume for very special screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show where you can join in the Time Warp Dance; as well as The Dark Knight Dress-Up Party (includes film screening) complete with a Joker make-up booth to get your face painted for free.
Join in the Mexican Day of the Dead celebrations with music, performances, shrine building, sugar skull decorating and a Mexican food market.
Other highlights include the Game of Thrones weekend, The Vampire Ball, MoTet's Nosferatu Symphony of Horror and Craft Macabre.
Check out themed Halloween window displays in participating Northbridge shops and pick up a free copy of the Carnival Macabre Guide (coming soon) from the i-City Kiosk in Murray Street Mall and participating venues for access to free trick or treat packs along with great discounts on shopping and dining.

Montage maker - Major Mitchell by Anja

Hi! I' m Anja founder of Major Mitchell Designs

I started the label in 2012 for the simple reason that I wanted to change the landscape of T-shirts out there. A T-shirt enthusiast myself it only seemed logical to start creating my own. When I'm not working on my own stuff I'm on the lookout for sneakers. One day a pair of Major Mitchell Jordan's or Nike high dunks will be taking the world by storm. In the meantime I mainly design screen prints for garments like T-shirts, crew neck jumpers and hoodies.

Sewing is also a big part of designing for Major Mitchell. Last winter's collection included T-shirts and hoodies with sewn on designs. The fabrics for those designs are mostly a collection from my travels to Germany and other parts of the world. Caps with sewn on designs are always part of Major Mitchell's products.
We created our first winter accessory this season which is a striped crochet beanie, the envy of every stylish person in Perth this winter.

Major Mitchell creates street wear but we don't expect you to be able to skateboard, the desire to attire with attitude is all you need! Whilst recently traveling to Berlin I found an awesome fabric with Cavaleras which I will use for pocket tees. The tees will be available at our next Pop up shop opening in October! ( details to be announced) We will also launch our second design of the “City Collection” at this pop up shop. This collection includes a NYC tee with screen printed pocket and the newest release will be an anthracite coloured tee with a screen printed Berlin pocket design.

Montage Maker - Jacquie of Delight Society

Hi. I’m Jacquie and I make soap, it’s a hobby and a passion and my favourite activity. 

I don’t know what it is about soap making that is so exciting. Oh sure, there’s measuring and mixing, but it runs much deeper than that. A love of alchemy. A desire to create. A willingness to explore new ingredients, aromas and flavours. My obsession has resulted in hundreds of experimental batches of soap and, with each one I draw one step closer to perfecting this craft: the ideal balance of vegetable oils, the perfectly sized bar, the most enchanting aromas. 

I love making fresh batches of handmade bars for family, friends and my beloved customers, each infused with pure essential oils, nourishing herbs and gentle clays. Each bar of soap is handmade and individually wrapped. I make the best quality product I can and only sell the best of the best; my perfectionist quality control personality demands it. Today, Delight Society is my petite Australian empire. I spend my days indulging in this unexpected passion by producing natural artisan soaps that truly delight. It is my sincere hope that you find delight in them, too.

Montage Maker interview - Stephanie of Caldi

My name is Stephanie, I am the fashion lady of  Montage with my label caldi, designing clothes for women.

After I finished my fashion degree 3 years ago I felt it was time to put all I learned into practice and my label was born.  I am part of Montage since the second shop and never looked back. Being involved in the pop up shops is so much fun: working in a self coordinated team of beautiful creative spirits, the ownership of running our own shop, supporting handmade in Perth, the closeness to our customers by selling our wares directly… the reasons are endless - I just love it!

The main reason I am a one woman show is I enjoy the whole process involved from designing to making and selling. Having customers walk out of our shop with a caldi purchase is the most rewarding experience. Naturally I love clothes, they are important and meaningful to me, some garments I own for many years as they become wearable storage spaces full of memories. I honestly think some I will never part with such as my very first top I designed and made.

If I had to pick a favorite stage of the design process it would be once sampling is finished and the style is ready for ‘production’. This is when a new style gains momentum and flows; there is no stopping then! Sampling can be a long journey of trial and error so when it’s finally perfect I am in bliss, I guess it is mostly the sense of achievement having translated a sketch and idea that only existed in my head into a wearable garment that fits well.

People always ask how inspiration strikes. The answer to this question is not as straightforward as one might expect. Being a creative person I already think in images, visually. As a designer I find my life experiences translate into shapes and form garments in on way or another. I think everyone can be creative and whatever it is you are making it is a reflection of you as a person and tells your story. I know the day will come when I grow out of being able to do everything myself and have to get my range made, but I am not ready to let go of that yet!

Montage Maker interview - Anna of Anna Hadwin Crochet toys

Tell us a bit about yourself
I have been crocheting and knitting since I was 5 years old. We moved from the UK to California and it was a great way to keep me occupied. My baby sister was only 6 weeks old. Moving back to the UK I made my first jumper at 8 years old, and I haven’t stopped crafting since.

What inspires you to create?
The joy of making. My husband (Toby) and daughter (Orlando) are both very artistic and their drawings and doodles supply me with many ideas. I love yarn, and have a “Wool Mountain” at my house.

What materials do you use?
Wool in  acrylic, cotton and specialty yarns.

What’s your number one market tip?
Stay positive and listen to advice from those around you- customers and stallholders. There is a wealth of knowledge out there.

What is your favourite part of the creative process?
Taking time out to plan new designs and seeing them take shape.

What’s been your most popular item or line to date?
Owl, Penguins and my Pirate Bunny. But who wouldn’t love a Pirate Bunny??

What is the most exciting thing that has come out of selling your designs through Montage?
Knowing that my products make people happy. I have many repeat customers and am now wholesaling.

What advice would you give someone who wants to sell their crafts
You might need to compromise with your product. I started out selling baby/children’s knitwear. But in our climate it was just too hard. So I thought toys and hats and home wares was a better choice.
